RETINA - Integrated photonic LIDAR system and instantaneous spectral image generators to increase multimodal perception in precision applications
ONGOING

The RETINA project aims to define a holistic framework for the development of photonics technologies, in which specific efforts in next-generation hardware solutions - centred on a new LIDAR solution and low-cost CMOS, InGaAs and QDs instantaneous spectral image generators - will be linked to the creation of a digital infrastructure for the agile and efficient development of machine learning based perception algorithms. This project aims to demonstrate how direct collaboration between developers and manufacturers of photonic solutions, experts in data processing and AI, as well as leading companies in strategic sectors, can guide the agile development of customised sensory systems and its deployment and validation in operational environments.

RETINA will also show the potential for adaptability, scalability and transferability of photonics-based solutions, responding to a range of industrial needs in an efficient and cost-effective way. The main goal of this project is to develop two new photonics-based sensory systems, covering hardware and software solutions to meet the personalised high added-value needs of the Health, Automotive and Wine sectors.

Regarding the wine sector, this project will provide new proximal detection instruments (aerial and terrestrial) and an image processing methodology to unlock and combine the potential of the HSI broadband and the LIDAR system for water stress monitoring and early detection of grapevine wood diseases.
